Ed Pretty from the Greater Vancouver Woodturning Guild will join us to give a presentation on a variation of "Beyond ABC, anchor, bevel, cut" that he calls Ten Things. It‘s actually more than 10 things but 10 was a nice round number. It will highlight things that many turners are not aware of or overlook.

Member Gallery: Members are encouraged to bring their woodturning creations to the monthly meeting.

The President‘s challenge this month is to turn a pot or vase that can be used to display flowers. Bonus points to those who also turn flowers and incorporate them into the display. A Craft Supply gift card will be awarded to one member. Any wood, any size is acceptable. Anyone bringing in their creation is eligible for a free wood raffle ticket. Their items will be photographed, and the photos posted on our website and might be included in the Newsletter.

Tool Raffle: A great way to pick up a new tool at a fraction of the cost if you‘re the lucky raffle winner!

Wood Raffle: There is always a good selection of quality turning wood donated by Club members.

Featured presenter: Keith Gotschall

Quaich: Spindle to bowl demo

In this information rich demo we will explore both spindle turning and bowl turning. The techniques of one are easily transferred to the other and Keith will show you how. He will go over grain direction and how that informs the direction of cut, and how that makes such a huge difference to the outcome of your project. Traditional turning techniques will be explored and all the basic tools will be shown in use. Have trouble making beads or coves? Keith will show you how to improve your shapes and make it easier to get reliable results. In bowl turning, these same ideas come into play. In the end we will have a winged bowl that has been turned both as a spindle and a bowl; a very traditional Scottish vessel called a “Quaich” that is used for ceremonial purposes. Very exciting!

Spend a day with Keith Gotschall learning to turn

Morning:

Bowls, bowls, bowls, demo.

In this fast paced demo, Keith will turn a number of bowls. Of course going over the techniques that go into creating an attractive, useful bowl, but also addressing the design language necessary to making better bowls. There will be an interactive critique of bowl design, shape, possibilities. Being able to critique our own work honestly is the key to getting better results. Audience participation is actively encouraged!

Afternoon:

3 leg stool demo.

In this demo Keith lays out the basic stool seat and shows how to drill at the appropriate angles. He then turns the seat using a 4 jaw chuck. Next he will then show how to lay out a leg using the minimum of measuring tools and explain how to replicate. Demonstrating beads, coves and straight cuts to make a simple pattern, he will then show how easily it can be replicated quickly and accurately.

You will learn elements of design that will make replicating the legs of the stool very easy. Discussion of design will also show how to avoid common pitfalls, and ways around possible flaws. Techniques shown are simple, but effective in both spindle turning and bowl turning. Discussion with the audience will cover critique, furniture styles, possible options for further exploration and wood selection.
