June 17th, two separate 3-hour sessions on top turning:
9:00am-Noon and 1:00pm – 4:00pm
Gerrit Van Ness’ shop in Bay View.
We’ll explore different ways to go about top making, choice of tools, safety, and whatever else you might want to know. Please try to bring some raw material and if you’d prefer to use your own tools fine, but the club has them if you don’t. Proper stock for top turning from solid blanks should be no less than 1-1/2″ square (or round if you’d prefer to pre-turn to a cylinder). Some people prefer to make their tops from dowels inserted into about 3/8″ thick x 1-1/2″ square blanks which we’ll explain how to make as well. Most peoples’ choice of tools is a 3/8″ bowl or spindle gouge.
If you’ve never turned tops before this is your golden opportunity! As has been announced, the third Sat in July the club will once again be participating in the annual Children’s Art Festival at Hillcrest Park. We’ll have all eight club mini-lathes set up to provide entertainment and tops for the kids that line up and watch in amazement as we ‘discover’ what’s inside a simple piece of wood. This is a lot of fun plus a chance to bring some joy to a lot of kids. This is a free event for the public which includes plenty of activities for the youth of our community.
If you’d like to sign up for one of the classes before the regular June meeting, please contact me directly. My contact information is in the club roster that all members should have received via email.
